The mallows are haunting me.

If you came for an intelligent, enlightening blog post... well what on Earth are you doing on my blog anyway?

We're talking about marshmallows people, marshmallows. I have to say its not one of those foods that I have to have. However, they seem to be haunting me lately. First I was on Elle's blog and she was using them in a craft project. Her lovely Bug was eating them.

Then I saw this on Vimeo. Its really adorable how they torture these children. Is it wrong to say that?

Oh, The Temptation from Steve V on Vimeo.

Then I was cleaning (making a bigger mess of) our closets and I found this case.

My sister-in-law gave B & I and my sister and her boyfriend each one a few Christmases ago.

Its a marshmallow gun of course! I'm not trying to promote fire arms or anything but these things are genius. It kept us entertained for hours. Mom was finding pertrified mallows for months.

You just load the marshmallows here. It fits one large one (which packs some punch) or you fit lots of little ones in there and its like an explosion of mallows. Its similar to a supersoaker in that you pump it. Remember those?

Anyway, all this can only mean one thing.

I believe its a clear sign that I need to do some marshmallow baking. I was thinking about making these Cookies and Cream Rice Krispie Treats. I briefly considered making marshmallows from scratch and then decided that I just don't love them enought for that. I also thought about s'mores but I don't have a fire pit or fireplace or even gas burners and using the creme brulee torch just isn't the same.

What is your favorite marshmallow using recipe?

  1. I'd share my favorite recipe, but it is so tricky that it is a challenge to follow. It involves graham crackers and Hershey bars!! :)

I seriously want a marshmallow gun! That is my kind of hunting!!

  2. I have seriously never heard of a marshmallow gun in all my life. Potato guns, yes we made those. But a marshmallow gun sounds a bit more friendly - if I had one there would never be any marshmallow baking in my house because the marshmallows would be ammunition in seconds. Pesky squirrels trying to destroy my screened porch, you've been warned.

  3. You have a marshmallow gun?! Wow.

Not a fan of marshmallows, but I tried the Rice Krispies recipe and it was easy and good --if you like sticky, gooey, sweet stuff. :)

  4. A few weeks ago my kids & I made Marshmallow Popcorn, and it was a huge hit. WARNING: this recipe is about as goopy as it gets, requiring you to eat the globs of popcorn hanging off your hands. This is either very fun or very offensive, depending on your personality.

Take a half bag of marshmallows & a half stick of salted butter in a bowl. Microwave until you can stir it together. Poor the Marshmallow Gloop over popped popcorn and stir. Kick the kids outside with bowl of popcorn. Watch them eat it off their hands.

  5. Wow, that is the mother of all marshmallow guns! I've only ever seen the cheesy plastic kind. The above comment about potato guns cracked me up, because my hubby and brother make those all the time, and they involve a lot of explosive type things like propane gas and so forth. Marshmallow guns are much more friendly...

I've wanted to make homemade marshmallows too, but just can't bring myself to experiment. I like s'mores, and rocky road, and occasionally marshmallows in my brownies, but I can't really say I've ever made anything else with them! I did make homemade oatmeal cream pies once, but that used marshmallow creme. So, you should share the recipe of whatever you decide to make!

Tortured they were I say, those kids were at eye level with those mallows. Hmmm, wonder how my kids would do with the marshmallow test? Now I want a marshmallow gun, I neeeeeed it!!!!!!! Hands down smores are my favorite and rice crispy treats are darn good too!

  14. I saw a recipe by Martha Stewart about two years ago for homemade marshmallows. Sprinkled with powder sugar. Soft and sweet, everything a marshmallow should be. I still dream about them.

I need to get a couple of those guns!

  18. I just remembered, for everyone who seems to be wishing they might try their hands at homemade marshmallows: Jill (from Homemade by Jill, http://homemadebyjill.blogspot.com) had a link last December to a recipe for homemade marshmallows on Your Heart Out (http://yourheartout.com/?p=1798). That recipe is for candy cane marshmallows, but Jill left off the candy canes and they looked delightful (and not too tough). I of course was too lazy to try them myself, but I'm not a giant fan of marshmallows (that's my excuse at least, and I'm sticking to it).

I have to go to the dentist shortly, but on my way home, I'm stopping by the grocery store to get the ingredients and coat my teeth with all of that sticky gooey ingredients in those cookie and rice crispy treats! My dentist thanks you in advance for keeping him in business!
