Anyone remember that?

My very first purchase for the baby and since then really the only purchases have been books. I hit up our local second hand bookstore during the buy 2 get 1 free sale and snuck away with some good finds. They seem to keep disappearing to my mom's house. In fact, I think she has all the new books I've gotten.

I'm determined to encourage reading with Peanut. I plan on daily reading sessions and lots of reading fun. Besides, I'll use any excuse to collect more books.

What books did you love reading as a child?

What books did your children love?

  1. I loved the classics like you have begun to purchase here, along with Winnie the Pooh and all the Dr. Seuss books. I did just what you are doing collecting books before my kids were born and had quite a collection over the last 16+ years, so much so that I have passed them on to my nieces and nephews who love to share story time with their parents too.

What a great thing to start your child's life out on a great note, the foster the love and joy of reading.

  2. One of the favorites was If you give a mouse a cookie and all of the Shel Silverstein Poetry. There were so many more but those come to mind. My youngest had asthma so we read 3 times a day when he had his treatments. On the up side he outgrew the asthma and got an A+ in organic chemistry this term. I believe all of that reading really did good things to his head!!!

  4. Reading Rainbow was my favorite show! I always loved the Bernstein Bears and the Fraggles as a kid. My mom saved all of them to give to my future kids.

  5. Oh as soon as I saw the title of your post that song popped in my head! And now I'm singing it over and over! (Thanks a lot :oP) I looooooove that you've already bought books for Peanut! Our very favorites are "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See", "Goodnight Moon" and "Go, Dogs. Go". Sophie especially loves Go Dogs Go. When we read it she'll yell out GO GOCKIE GO!!! And when we read Goodnight Moon Tristan says "nigh night" to everything. I love how they get their favorites and memorize them as only a 1 year old can. So sweet! Also we love God Gave Us You. I think anything by Sandra Boynton, PD Eastman or Margaret Wise Brown is wonderful. The kids seem really attracted to the simple or repeating rhymes.
I love that you got a treasury--those are the best. You are such a good momma. Peanut is so loved.

  8. It's like if you can get your child/ren to enjoy books, you've done at least one thing right.

Here are a few of what J and Z like. :)

  9. OMG, I LOVED Reading Rainbow. Sometimes I just sing that song randomly and repeatedly pester Scott about how great that show was. So exciting that you're collecting books for your little one! My favorites growing up were Richard Scarry books, the George & Martha series, & the Berenstain Bears :)

  10. I read to Big Chick all the time. Goodnight Moon is a must and I Like Me. Those are my two favorites. Little chick definitely got the short end of the stick for some reason. Maybe it's not too late.

Oh and BTW I sent you something today;)

  11. "I'll Love You Forever" is a necessity-- along with "Oh the Places You'll Go." Later on, I loved the original "The Box Car Children" book!

  13. My kids loved the Give A Mouse A Cookie book and the follow up stories to it (Give a Moose a Muffin was a fave). They also liked the Tacky the Penguin series, and I have to admit it was one that I never tired of reading to them. He's such a character!

  14. Oh, man, we were avid readers. When my niece was born my mom and I popped by the bookstore to get her "a few staples." We had to force ourselves to stop after $90 of books. Sigh.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Good Night Moon, all the Beatrix Potter books, Angelina Ballerina, Berenstein Bears, all the Little Golden Books...
