There are some people that eat because you need to eat to live. I call it eating to exist. I am not one of those people.
My new daily breakfast of 1/2 cup cooked plain oatmeal. Every.day. ~sigh~
My nutritionist is one of those people. I'm supposed to take my blood sugar levels exactly 1 hour after first bite, but there were times in the past that we would still be eating. When I told her that she looked at me like I had two heads. Of course, with my new diet this won't be an issue...ever. There will be no more multiple course anything.
On top of developing gestational diabetes I seem to have a new cholesterol problem. I was pretty surprised because I had it tested when I first got pregnant and I was just fine. I'm not going to dwell on it but it definitely throws another level to the already dismal diet. This has caused the banning of red meat, seafood and egg yolk. This leaves me with egg whites, tofu, lean chicken and lean turkey and I'm bartering for some lean pork loin.
It feels quite insane. Especially for me. I've never counted carbs in my life and I have a don't eat list a mile long. It's been drastic this week as we gain quick control over these problems. We have to work fast, we're not making slow lifestyle changes but dramatic quick changes for the good of Peanut.
On the do not eat list is: dessert (obviously), any grains that aren't whole grain, egg yolk, red meat, seafood, any additional fat like oil or butter and get this- fruit. I'm taking multi-vitamins and eating a variety of veggies to make sure Peanut is getting everything he needs. Add that do not eat list to the pregnancy do not eat list and you have one sad lady.
I have to eat every 3 hours and as you can see the diet plan for the week was repetitive and boring. After breakfast, lunch and dinner I need to walk/exercise for at least 15 minutes to help burn the glucose. If I eat one meal late it throws off my schedule for the day.
I'm hoping this next week I can change things up a bit because I'm already getting tired of half-sandwiches. I've always known how important eating was to me but this really brought it home. I need variety. I'm hoping today's meeting with the nutritionist goes well and she can give me other options for meals.
I miss so many things about a varied diet. I miss cheese. I miss different proteins. I miss eating meals with B. I'm sad to be cancelling plans we had that involved eating.
I know this will all be worth it in the end, don't get me wrong. I just cannot wait to eat my favorite foods again. I.cannot.wait.
Ugh. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this. But just think... just a couple of weeks ok.. so like 8 and Peanut will be here! And sushi and cake and alcohol and all the fun fun fun stuff.
ReplyDeletep.s. I love oatmeal. But I'm really picky about it. The steel cut Irish oats from Trader Joes are my favorite. Thats the kind they use at Jamba Juice (which is actually my favorite oatmeal ever. I miss working there and getting it for a buck). They add soy milk to it but it's good without it too.
I found some new books for Peanut too! I'll email you a list :)
That sounds incredibly difficult, considering what a food lover you are, and I think it would be a challenge for just about anyone but if anyone can do it though, I know you can and just remember that all of us are here cheering you on through the final stretch. Hang in there girl!
ReplyDelete"All for Peanut, all for Peanut, all for Peanut." Keep chanting that.
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, you're eating really healthily! :)
I've done those extreme diets and it is so hard. Especially at first...the cravings are out of control. Don't worry you are doing it for that little one and he will be HERE before you even know it:) And on the upside you won't have as much weight to lose. So that's good!
ReplyDeleteMy days are totally based round food. Sorry for you. Xxx
ReplyDeleteI really don't agree with your nutritionist. I am a diabetic and this is a totally unreasonable diet for you to have to stick to. I would really question this type of advice. Anything that is extreme is not healthy. As a nurse and a diabetic, this is not the typical advice given.
ReplyDeleteChrystal
I have to agree with Chrystal... have you had a second opinion? This seems exceedingly extreme.
ReplyDeleteTry to keep your spirits up! Start making a wish list for B... call it "Things you will be bringing Mommy." And of course, it's all going to be done before the holidays.
It won't be forever... I promise!
How could this possibly be enough calories for a woman who's in her third trimester of pregnancy? Why would unsaturated fat be a problem for someone with high cholesterol? What is her obsession with sandwiches, i.e. why couldn't you eat quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat couscous, beans, or any other variety of whole grain carbohydrate? In short, am I alone in thinking this nutritionist is an a-hole who doesn't know what she's doing?
ReplyDeleteLoving the feedback. I meet with my doctor on Thursday and we'll go over my diet. I also have an appointment with a Perinatalogist (sp?) who will look at my diet as well.
ReplyDeleteSo after a second and third opinion I will be adjusting my diet. I've also decided to start adding other whole grain carbs into my diet to gain some variety from the dreaded half-sandwich. I'll keep you posted!
Oh man! Bummer is WAY to small of a comment for the real disappointment of this. I'm sorry, my friend.
ReplyDeleteSuch a bummer. I love food too, and would have such a hard time trying to follow a specific diet. But do what is best for baby.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you were able to get some good news and extend your menu!
Girl, that doesn't seem like enough food for a pregnant woman! But then again.. I'm not an expert. I live to eat. LOL
ReplyDeleteHang in there sweetie.
Oh wow. For a foodie, that's gotta a very difficult diet to follow! Big hugs for you. :o(
ReplyDeleteAs you know, we have been tranferred (AGAIN!) so I have been out of the loop. I am sorry about your diet. It won't be long and you can eat regular again.
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel a little tiny bit better I eat only white meat too, but its by choice. I did have a cookie this afternoon and thought of you. Hang in there doll.
