This weeks post will be short and sweet.
We went to True Food Kitchen (which I'll blog about at Eating the Orange on Thursday)
and as soon as I saw bison on the menu I knew I had to try it.
So, yeah, it tastes like beef.
I thought the burger was tasty and the umami sauce on it was phenomenal but that's a different subject.
Bison has been described as sweeter or richer than beef but a burger is probably not the best way to really compare. I did a quick internet search and found this info on the nutritional difference:
Ground bison and beef are high in protein (about 22g per serving) and in many vitamins (e.g. niacin, vitamins B-6, B-12 and A, iron, selenium, zinc and phosphorous). Both are also high in cholesterol. Bison burgers are far lower in fat than all but very lean ground beef burgers. Unlike nonorganic beef, bison are not exposed to antibiotics or growth hormones.
So really, although the flavor might not be much different the fact that it's healthier makes me a happy camper.
Peanut had a bite and he like it too.
He was more interested in eating our veggies and the "pish" from our fish tacos.
Have you ever tried bison?
What did you eat this week?
Peanut is going to grow up with having had fabulous food choices and experiences . . . thanks to you . . . Bison at two, (almost?) and I have not, at seventy two.
ReplyDeleteSomething I haven't eaten for a long time is rutabaga and I had it last night with other roasted vegetables. My mom used to make a Cornish Pasty meat pie which had shredded rutabaga, carrots, potatoes, onion, ground round, spices . . .
(Bison would be very good in this.). Pasty was my all time favorite "comfort" food when I was off to college and would come home craving "mom's cooking."
He's actually 15 months today :) He tries everything we eat. So I became completely addicted to meat pies when we were in New Zealand for our honeymoon. Is that a pasty?! I adored them. The ultimate comfort food! Do you by any chance have a recipe?
DeleteWe are totally on the same wave length! I was thinking of buying some bison next week for us to try. There is a huge herd not too far from us, too. It's really neat to watch them, as they are native to our state. I haven't made anything cool for the past week...still need to figure out what to do with my beets. I did make a quinoa loaf and while it was incredibly tasty, it wasn't pretty so I didn't take pictures. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you can see bison by your house is mind-blowing. I get excited when I see bunnies. I've been wanting to try that quinoa loaf!
DeleteBison burgers cooked on grills at local summer festivities. I suppose if it were in the grocery store I might buy it now and then. It's good.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I made my first kimchi! Even though I don't know what kimchi is supPOSED to taste like, I think mine turned out pretty good. Tasted it first time this morning.
Congrats on the kimchi! I've found that it really varies in taste depending on who makes it (style, ethnicity, added ingredients) so if you like it then I think it's a winner.
DeleteI ate bison in Colorado last summer and loved it! Had a steak salad one night, a steak on another. Both times, far more tender than I anticipated. Sweet, and slightly gamier than beef, though not so much as lamb. If I could find it to buy, I certainly would. I agree, a burger is not the best way to get the flavor.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awesome! I'll keep my eye out for steak.
Deletei love bison. it's just hard to find and expensive, but so good for you. i've eaten nothing exciting this week. nothing at all...bummer.
ReplyDeleteI made yogurt. The angels sang and my taste buds loved me. I will never go back to store bought.
ReplyDeleteMy adventure this week also involved burgers!
