Our fetus has an iPod

Our child will be born into privilege. If not in the financial sense, at least in the sense that it's a privilege to have us as parents. Right?

There is also the privilege of owning an iPod before birth. You know kids and their technology!

No, we did not buy Peanut an iPod. Peanut's dad is a bit of a nut himself and somehow inherited a broken iPod (or two) that he then had fixed. So we designated an extra iPod to the baby. It's many years old but I don't think Peanut will notice the small grey screen. We'll fill it with lovely songs that mom and dad will enjoy.

I suspect eventually we'll have to fill it with not so lovely but very cheery, repetitive, annoying songs that might drive mom and dad crazy.

The song below is the first song going on Peanut's iPod. When I first heard it many years ago I pictured a scene in which I stood looking down into the crib of my sleeping babe with this song playing softly in the background. I can't believe that will really be happening!

Here is IZ (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) singing Ahi Wela / Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

The versus are done in both English and Hawaiian

I've been told that some babies really benefit from a little white noise in those first few months. I'm thinking sounds of the ocean or softly falling rain.

Help me pick some music for Peanut's iPod! Did/do you share music with the children in your life? Are they songs that make you sigh and slumber? Are they songs that make your imagination run wild? Are they songs that make you giggle and clap or songs that make you sing as loud as you can?

Anything you or your kids love that should go on here?

  1. That is my favorite song by IZ :)

  2. I don't know if the your kid will love this while it's small, but afterwards, it'll just adore the first pair of shoes. I still have mine: black adidas sneakers...

  3. Play lovely classical music...and do it before the baby is born! Then there will already be familiar music, having comforted while in, now comforting once out of your belly. :)

  4. We play music that both C and I enjoy. Whatever we're in the mood for at the moment (kiddie tunes, pop rock, classical, jazz, etc.) It'd be great to be able to enjoy music as a family. Case in point --

One time during a drive, we had "Joy to the World" from the soundtrack of "The Big Chill" playing and J said that he didn't like it. On the way back, he was singing along to the chorus. Now Z asks to play that song, too --and sings along to it together with all of us. :)

  5. I would add "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong and Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and last Divine Romance by Phil Whickham.

I love this beautiful and soothing idea. Congratulations Peanut!

  6. My kids love Jack Johnson... And Christmas music. And the random Twilight soundtrack. And praise and worship from church. And The Flaming Lips, "Don't use jelly" (which I play on our kitchen ipod every time I make them toast) And lastly... the Peaches song by The Presidents of the United STates of America group. They sing that one at the top of their lungs while swinging.

Maybe you shouldn't have asked me.

(me, singing..."Moving to the country...gonna eat a lot of peaches... peaches come in a can, they were put there by a man, in a factory dowwwnnntowooon... If I had my little way, I'd eat peaches every day... millions of peaches.... peaches for me....")

Sorry. I break into spontaneous SINGING (not clapping) from time to time. It's best just to let me continue til I've sung the whole verse.

  7. I grew up loving the songs my parents loved. That's probably why I know the words to a lot of classic rock and roll songs. Genesis' I can't walk was a big hit in our family.

I love this idea of dedicating an ipod to the Peanut. Music was such a big part of my childhood. Christmas music is a definite must but I'm sure you've already preloaded those. ;-)

The longer you can avoid the annoying songs by the big Purple Dinosaur the better.

  8. The Backyardigans always had some groovin' little tunes. Baby of Mine by Alison Krauss always did me in as an expectant mom. Blessings to you and peanut and the hubs too.

  9. Colbie Caillat's first album was out and my obsession when I was pregnant with my midge. He actually just found it today and handed it me to put in his CD player. I-of course-got all emotional and was trying to over explain to a two year old how I use to dance him to sleep and sing to him when he was just in my belly. ;)

  10. The progeny all have very eclectic tastes in music, most likely because HHBL and I do. I "made" them listen to what I was listening to which ranges from bluegrass to classical and all things in between. Be sure to add in musicals old and new.

  12. My crew is older and as such we're into the songs that make your head bop and then your shoulders start moving, and before you know it you're out of your chair shaking your butt and boogie-ing(sp?).

  13. Hands down best kids music - "Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies" by Andrew Peterson and Randall Goodgame. Cute songs but funny enough that adults laugh. My 11 month old nephew loves his CD - ok, so he isn't quite as technologically advanced as peanut since he still uses CDs :). The other day he was listening to it with his mom and crawled over to the CD player and turned up the volume. He was quite proud of himself.

  14. You have to add Brother Iz's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Out here in tornado land-- it is a favorite. (Though Eva Cassidy's arrangement is absolutely beautiful, too!) I also like the Weepies "Can't Go Back Now." Billy Joel has "Lullaby- Good Night My Angel." Kids and music go together--everything is a song to them!

  15. I say let them listen to what you listen to, your peanut will love it cause you do. When in the car with me the punk listens to country and in the car with daddy is ROCK, he will have diverse taste, i don't indulge in kiddie tunes, drives me nuts!! love this idea and yes my son loves white noise, I always had something going, an aquarium hooked to his bed, the fan, something!! :)
