The good, the simple & the beautiful.

Wanaka- 211

This past weekend was full of family and friends in a flurry of activities separated by lots of driving. Saturday consisted of a funeral in Fresno (4 hours away from us) and a wedding in San Francisco (4 hours away from there) and Sunday we drove back. On our way home yesterday B and I talked about what a good weekend it was. It was full of laughter and tears and fond memories. A celebration of life.

The funeral on Saturday was for B's Gung Gung (grandfather). The ceremony was beautiful and incredibly touching. The love in their family, our family, is palpable. It was a time for me to learn about Gung Gung. I learned things I never knew about a man so highly regarded by those who knew him. The butcher, the gardener, the painter, the philosopher. He lived a great 97 years. I think it was 97. It might have been 94. That's still up for discussion.

In the program there was a letter of rememberance and some of the words keep streaming through my head.

"We see you watching the world go by in awe and wonder. Now we gaze with you looking for what you saw- the good, the simple, and the beautiful in everything."

So today in honor of B's Gung Gung I hope we can all take a look around us a notice the good, the simple and the beautiful.

  1. What a full weekend! I know what you are saying about the extremes of one event to the other. Made you do some deep thinkin' I'm sure. Got to love a funeral where the person is in their 90's, and ready to go on to a better heavenly home. Great quote:)

  2. Fantastic quote, and I am glad that you got to be with your family and friends. those were two extremes that both bring on so many emotions. I hope I always have an outlook like that quote, because there is good and beautiful in every day sometimes you just have to seek it!

  3. Awww, this hits home. My Grandpa is 84, and has really been declining over the past few months. I don't like thinking about what is in our near future...even though he'll be where he's spent his whole life telling people they want to go, it's still not something I want to face anytime soon.

  6. Dawn,

I was thinking how sad to witness a glorious ending and a beautiful beginning of lives this weekend. I am touched by the simple beauty in the words you have left us to think about. We need to look at the simple things and appreciate those we love and whose lives we are fortunate to bear a witness to!

  11. Aww. Funerals are always quite the experience. I always find myself wondering what mine will be like. Often, that's time for some good reflection. I keep waiting for my grandma's... she's getting up there in age... so sad.

  12. I'm glad you could enjoy your crazy weekend. Many of us would complain and whine but thanks for the reminder that it's not always about us. The funny thing is when we realize it's not all about us, that's usually when we're blessed by whatever is going on.
