I first discovered Roscoe's while I was in college in Long Beach. It wasn't until we lived in LA that our relationship grew into the deep commitment we now have for each other.

The three of us have seen so many good times. We've had so many bonding moments. The chicken, the waffles and I.

Typically we go to Roscoe's in Hollywood on our way to Amoeba but B had a craving so we drove to the much closer one in Long Beach.

B likes the #11: Giblets, gravy, onions, rice and a hot biscuit.

And one thigh southern style. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and fried with a crispy skin and not too much breading. Its about the chicken here, not the batter.

I get the #2 Scoe's: 1/4 chicken smothered in gravy and onions with 2 waffles, their own private mix.

You must try these waffles. I don't know what is in this batter but they are insanely good. Lets just say you were to smear all of that butter onto the waffle (not that I would) and then pour one ramekin of syrup onto it (not that I would) you would have this perfect waffle. Not mushy, not crunchy, juuuuuust right. (Hypothetically speaking).

They'll ask you if you'd like all white meat, all dark meat or mixed. They'll also ask if you want the gravy on top or on the side.

I think thats awfully nice of them. I had dark and white meat. I ate the breast because, you know, I'm trying to lose that extra honeymoon weight.

We usually try different sides each time but these candy yams are fantastic. They were so flavorful and the sweetness completely took care of my dessert craving.

What I am going to tell you next is very, very important.

Are you ready?

You must always, always make sure you get one perfect bite during every meal. In this case it involves 1. waffle (with butter and syrup on top) 2. fried chicken 3. gravy & onions

Thats right, you need to eat the waffle with the chicken and gravy. Perfect balance of sweet, salty and artery clogging.

Have you ever noticed we always order too much food? I just want to assure you that none of it goes to waste. B loves leftovers.

I could do an entire post on the random things B saves (and uses). Like the yams for instance. I mean, its like a heaping tablespoon. But B would never let it go to waste.

If you are in the area head over to Roscoe's as soon as you can!

Have you ever had chicken and waffles before?

  1. The next time I'm in SoCal, can I get you to give me a list of the must-go-to places to eat? Somehow I always get to your posts right after dinner and you make my mouth water, despite my full stomach!

  5. I've never had chicken and waffles...together. Of course, there aren't any Roscoe's or restaurants like Roscoe's in the near north. Interesting, isn't it? ; )

  10. Oh yeah, Roscoes is delicious! Have you tried their grits? Yummy!!!!

I usually have the gravy on the side though. I am such a messy eater that gravy would be everywhere! Thanks for proving to me that I still have an appetite!

  13. Dawn,

I can't say whether or not I would try this, just something about waffles, gravy, chicken and onions all together blending in one harmony makes me cringe. So glad you enjoy it though.

  14. Oh, LOVE. I've been putting syrup all over my breakfast meats (sausage & bacon) since childhood so when I first discovered Roscoe's I was in heaven. I don't think I've been since college, but will be dragging Scott there soon thanks to your delicious post!

  17. I have never heard of such a thing, Okies like their chicken with fried okra, buttered biscuits and sweat tea. But I'd go for it. I'd eat onions on chocolate cake. Maybe...

  19. Oh man, I want to try that chicken and waffles combo SO BAD! It looks amazing! Restaurants around here don't serve that. Pretty sure Snoop Dogg ate at Roscoes in his show, and that's what got me obsessed with the idea. I'm so going there next time we hit SoCal.
