Its like play money...only more expensive.

Christmas 086

Woo hoo! We are gearing up for New Zealand and I cannot wait. I really can't even believe its here!

How on Earth do people get organized enough to leave on their honeymoon the day after their wedding?

Christmas 072

Not that I've done anything for the honeymoon since the wedding. We haven't even packed yet.

I wish I were joking. The holidays and the wedding just swept right thru and here we are...2 days away.

Christmas 074

I did manage to get us a bit of New Zealand cash though.

Did you notice that the bills themselves are actually different sizes?

Christmas 076

New Zealand money is also called the dollar and they come in the same denominations as US.

I understand the change comes in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cents and $1 and $2.

Christmas 077

The texture is different than ours.. its more plastic-y. They also have those cool little clear plastic parts that say the dollar amount.

The $5 is orange and features a yellow-eyed tropical penguin on the back. I really hope I get to see a real one. Penguin that is.

Christmas 078

The $10 is blue and features Kate Sheppard who was a key historical figurre in New Zealand women's suffrage movement.

Christmas 079

Did you know that Zew Zealand was the first country to grant women the right to vote?

Women have been voting there since 1893.

Christmas 080

The $20 bill is green and features Queen Elizabeth II.

All of the bills feature the Silver Fern on the side. It is also made from a translucent plastic and is a symbol widely used by Kiwis.

Christmas 081

It does seem a little odd doing an entire post about money but I've always found the different kinds of money to be so interesting.

Christmas 082

Why don't we get pretty colors? Our money is rather boring now that I think about it.

The $50 and features Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata a Maori politician. Are you taking notes, there may be a quiz later.

Christmas 083

The problem is that this just feels like play money.

Excuse me sir, that will cost two purple pieces of paper. Thank you very much.

Christmas 084

On the bright side, the US$ is strong so we get more bang for our buck over there.

Christmas 085

But I still don't think B will appreciate me throwing it around because its pretty and it doesn't look like real money.

Christmas 087

I think tonight I better get packin'. We'll be gone for 2 weeks, in and out of different hotel and hauling our luggage. I don't need to pack the whole closet.

That will be my mantra.

When was the last time you took a vacation? Where did you go?

  4. That is some really neat moolah! I bet NZ is going to be amazing, be sure to take pictures. HA! Like you need reminded! ;) I haven't been on a real vacation in a year and a half. Unless you count my 4 day stay in the hospital last January, and I do not... - we went ATV'ing in the Colorado mountains in June of 08. I was 8 weeks pregnant, in the throws of morning sickness and couldn't enjoy blazing up steep mountain trails. It was great.

  5. Have a great and safe Honeymoon/vacation/enjoy New Zealand trip!
If you any of that colorful money leftover, it would look cool framed with memorabilia from there.
My last vacation . . . to Ohio for a blacksmith convention. Bet ya' never been to one of those?
Next trip? To Oklahoma City for a late Christmas get together with my daughter and her BF/almost fiancee?!?

  6. Oh!! Have a wonderful time! Great lesson on the NZ currency. You wonder if they have the counterfeiting problems we seem to have with the plastic coating and all. Will it fold into a wad or is it too stiff?

I used to pack big suitcases every time we went somewhere. Then we went to Ireland for almost 2 weeks and I knew that I had to pack light ... so I packed a carry-on and a big hand bag and that was it. Did just fine. I did buy a few articles of clothing, but I put those in a big foldable bag that I brought along with us and Tony carried that home.
Couldn't believe that I packed so lightly, but it worked. I think limiteing the shoes was a big help for me!

  7. What a great post!

I leave for 3 days for Jamaica - but it won't be a vacation...it's a medical mission trip. I have to pack for 8 days in a carry-on only. Our checked luggage holds the pharmacy drugs. And won't that be fun - taking in 26 suitcases full of drugs (there's 26 of us going). Through customs. Customs will have a field day with us!

    Have fun in NZ!

  13. I can't wait to see and hear all about your trip. We went to Washington DC this past summer and to Texas to visit family. I have to say that Washington wasn't as fun as me and my son thought it would be. My husband on the other hand loved it. Last year we flew to Oregon and drove the coast, went whitewater rafting, rode dune buggys on the huge dunes and went to Crater Lake. My son loved it. We have been trying to take him some place great every summer because he will be out of the house before we know it. Have a great trip. Be safe.

  14. Dawn,

I love this colorful money. You know what it reminds me of? The old tickets that you had to buy at Disneyland before the days of passports or season passes. The colors look the same. How fun to save a couple of the lower denominations for souvenirs from your trip. Can't wait to see more pictures where you return.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

  19. Our last serious vacation was spending 3 weeks in China and Japan last spring -- we visited my sister-in-law who works for the US government in China, and my host family in Japan who I lived with as an exchange student in 2001. It was awesome! For our honeymoon, we first went to DC where my sister-in-law got married 5 days after we did, then spent a week in each Greece, Italy, and Croatia. We don't take many vacations, so we try to make them count!

That same sister-in-law just got back from a few weeks in New Zealand and they loved it; I'm sure you will, too. Have a wonderful trip and I can't wait to see photos!
