21 Wiener Salute!

Friday I will get back to the story of the diagnosis but today we'll pay homage to one of the great American heroes!

I know you all immediately thought of Mr. Oscar Mayer. You didn't? What would America be without Oscar Mayer products?

Mr. Oscar Mayer (the third) died on Monday at the age of 95.
Oh Mr. Mayer, I do hope you realized how many July 4th celebrations you just completed with your wieners. I hope you realized how fondly I think of you and your bacon and your dogs and even your bologna. You have been a part of my life and always will.

There are so many things I love about Oscar Mayer. Can you believe the jingle has been around since 1963? 1963!

All this wiener promotion brought on wonderful and amazing things like... the Weinermobile!
I hope you don't think the wienermobile has one foot, er...wheel, out the door. Oh no my friends, the wienermobile is still making its rounds throughout the country.

Don't believe me?

Well, you can follow the Hotdoggers on their blog. Yes, they have a blog. And they Twitter. Tweet. Twitt. Whatever you call it. How is it that Hotdoggers are twittering and I'm not?

That song has been popular since 1976. I think I was born singing that song. Mom, did you eat a lot of bologna during your pregnancy?

If I had bologna in the house right now I would amaze you with my magic bologna bowl. When I was around 11 and my niece was 5 I used to entertain her with my microwave trick. You place the bologna in the microwave, carefully fold 1 Kraft single into a small square, place it in the middle, whisper some magic words, turn on the microwave and WALLA! The bologna magically curls into a bowl full of melted cheese!
Hey. Don't judge me!

Since I'm being honest here, there is one Oscar Mayer product I'm not a fan of. The Wienerwhistle. Something about the Wienerwhistle makes me giggle and cringe at the same time.

OK one last confession. This one goes to Mr. Mayer himself. I apologize for buying Hebrew Nationals 97% Fat Free hotdogs last Friday. To make it up to you I will buy some processed meat products and feast... because I would do that for you.

  1. Seriously...who doesn't love a post about wieners?!?

  2. It's funny how a girl who won't even think about touching organ meats or even weird stuff like tongue or blood sausage will eat an Oscar Meyer without a second thought. They're best if they've been charred over a campfire or a grill that hasn't been cleaned since the dawn of time. Why is that?

Oh, and I deleted my first comment because I spelled "they're" wrong. Can we say OCD?

  3. Yay for wiener posts!

Don't you worry Carina I deleted your OCD mishap :) We mostly don't think about what is in these odd processed meat products... its safer that way.

  4. "Then everyone would be in love with me"
Thanks, now that song will be stuck in my head and I will dream of bologna sandwiches : )

My mom used to take the bologna and wrap it around a banana and eat it. I still can't bring myself to even approach that, but I do like fried bologna. Don't tell anyone though.

  5. Those old commercials were so entertaining! BBQ'd hot dogs is an American privilege. An American right! Every citizen should eat one at least once a weekend. It's the right thing to do.

  6. Nothing like a good OM hot dog! We grilled a few dozen on the 4th and didn't have too many left!
Love the walk down memory lane, Dawn!

  7. Oh, great post! I love the bologna bowl idea... that's a good one! Do you know, growing up we used to have fried bologna? one of my dad's favorite 'meats'. But you had to make cuts at the edges so it didn't curl up in the pan. It's most likely a redneck, midwestern thing. I'm pretty sure :) -Tammy

  8. I can't believe I've never heard of fried bologna.... but I'm not really surprised I've never heard of bologna wrapped bananas :)

Someone please try it and get back to me.

  9. The bologna bowl! I used to make those too when I was a kid! I always found if you leave the ring on, then it would bowl up better. :)
And occassionally, I'd have the inverted bowl.

Thanks for your comment about my chinchillas. They are as soft and fluffy as they look. I love to see people's faces the first time they pet one. :)

I am a jingle girl. You've got me singing Oscar Mayer. I'll be at it all day.
